How is VAT calculated?

Entrepreneurs who use accounting software for their bookkeeping and invoicing actually no longer have to calculate the VAT and the gross price they have to state in their invoices themselves – the software takes care of this service. However, if you don't have software or a VAT calculator at hand, you can also easily calculate the VAT on a net amount or the net amount from a gross amount yourself.

The calculation of the VAT amount is carried out using percentage calculation. The values you need for the calculation are the gross amount (price including taxes), the net amount (price without taxes), the amount of VAT and the VAT rate (19 or 7 percent). Basically: Net amount + VAT = Gross amount

If the gross amount is 50 euros and the standard VAT rate of 19 percent applies, you calculate the net amount as follows:

VAT rate = 19%
Conversion factor = 1.19
Net = Gross / 1.19
The net price is therefore 42.01 Euro.

Net = 100 Euro
VAT rate = 19%
Conversion factor = 1.19
Gross = Net x 1.19
The gross price is therefore 119 Euro.

Which VAT rate is charged on which products?

In Germany, the standard VAT rate for taxable sales is 19%. The reduced VAT rate of 7% applies to selected sales of daily needs. These include, for example:
